Mills None of these mills are in operation at present, but many are still standing and have equipment inside. Flannagan's or Trice's This mill was built in 1765 on Trice's Lake in northern Cumberland County. After it burned, it was rebuilt on the original site in early 1800. Muddy Creek or Moon's This mill located at Tamworth one mile from the James River was built in 1753 and enlarged in 1785. Its construction consists of native rock and brick and a roof of slate imported from Scotland. Examples of 18th and 19th century machinery remain, and it is designated as an historic landmark. Trenton/Sports Lake This grist mill was built prior to 1750 of stone quarried near the site on Randolph Creek where it enters the Willis River on Route 672 (Sports Lake Road). Rushing waters of Hurricane Agnes in 1972 damaged the mill and the owner spent much time and money making a "sportsman's paradise" of the mill pond and surrounding area. |
