Reservoir Project

Cumberland County has obtained one permit for the proposed reservoir and awaits permits from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Army Corps of Engineers. The first permit for the proposed intake was issued by the Virginia Marine Resource Commission by unanimous vote. Route 60 Streetscape/Corridor Study

The County has made application for an additional Transportation Enhancement grant to continue the Route 60 streetscape plan. The application, submitted for the November 1, 2006 deadline, requests funding for streetlights along Route 60 from the High School to the Courthouse and related installation costs. Tourism

As a member of Virginia’s Retreat, a 13-County tourism marketing consortium, Cumberland County is included in the Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail. The trail currently comprises 41 sites with detailed interpretation and photos at each location. Through a partnership with the Old Dominion Resource Conservation and Development Council and Virginia’s Retreat, the self-guided driving tour is being enlarged to add more sites. The County has submitted Luther P. Jackson High School for inclusion in the expansion, which should take place in the next two years. Read more...

Water System

Construction of the new water system, which will serve the immediate Courthouse area has been completed and is operational. The project was funded by Rural Development with a grant for $215,950; a STAG for $173,500 from the Environmental Protection Agency; $500,000 from Rural Development’s Emergency Community Water Assistance Grant; $108,483 from the Virginia Tobacco Commission; and $410,205 from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.
